How to Calculate Your Golf Handicap Index

  1. Enter your scores. Add each round you have played, up to 20. Enter the gross score (total strokes), the course rating, and the slope rating. You can find both ratings on your scorecard or the course's website.
  2. Use at least 3 rounds. The World Handicap System (WHS) requires a minimum of 3 score differentials. The more rounds you add, the more accurate your index becomes.
  3. Read your Handicap Index. The calculator shows your index, the score differentials for each round, and which rounds were used (marked with *).
  4. Course Handicap. To get your Course Handicap for a specific tee, multiply your Handicap Index by the slope rating and divide by 113, then add or subtract the difference between course rating and par.

The WHS uses the best differentials from your last 20 rounds. With only 3 to 5 rounds, it uses just 1 differential with a small buffer adjustment. As you play more, more differentials are included, giving a more accurate picture.

WHS Handicap Index Formula

The World Handicap System (WHS), adopted globally in 2020, calculates a Handicap Index using these steps:

Score Differential = (Score - Course Rating) × (113 / Slope Rating)

Handicap Index = Average of lowest N differentials × 0.96

Where N depends on how many rounds you have played:

Rounds PlayedDifferentials UsedAdjustment
31-2
41-1
510
6-820
9-1130
12-1440
1550
1660
1770
18-2080

The slope rating of 113 is the standard slope for a course of average difficulty. Dividing by the actual slope rating adjusts for courses that are harder or easier than average. The 0.96 multiplier is the WHS "playing conditions" scaling factor.

Frequently Asked Questions

The average male golfer has a handicap around 14 to 16. For women, the average is around 25 to 28. A single-digit handicap (below 10) is considered a good golfer, and a scratch golfer (0 handicap) can be expected to shoot even par. Only about 2% of golfers are scratch or better.
