How to Use the Pace Calculator

Select what you want to calculate, then fill in the two known values:

  • Pace: Enter the total distance (in miles or km) and your finish time (in hours, minutes, seconds). The calculator shows your average pace per mile and per km, plus your speed in mph and km/h.
  • Time: Enter the distance and your target pace (minutes and seconds per mile or km). The calculator shows the projected finish time for any race distance.
  • Distance: Enter how long you ran and your pace. The calculator shows how far you traveled. Useful for treadmill runs where you know the time and pace setting but want the distance.

The results also include a pace conversion table showing your speed at each common unit (min/mile, min/km, mph, km/h), making it easy to compare to treadmill settings or GPS watch data.

Race Pace Guide and Time Goals

Common race distances with required pace for different finish times:

Goal Time5K Pace (min/mi)10K Pace (min/mi)Half MarathonMarathon
Under 20 min (5K)6:26/mi---
Under 25 min (5K)8:03/mi---
Under 30 min (5K)9:39/mi---
Under 1:00 (10K)-9:39/mi--
Under 2:00 (Half)--9:09/mi-
Under 4:00 (Marathon)---9:10/mi
Under 3:30 (Marathon)---8:01/mi
Boston Qualifier (men 18-34)---6:51/mi

Pace conversion: divide 60 by your pace in min/mile to get mph. An 8:00/mile pace is 7.5 mph. A 10:00/mile pace is 6 mph. For km: 1 mile = 1.609 km, so a 6:00/mile pace is 3:44/km.

Frequently Asked Questions

A comfortable beginner pace is typically 10-14 minutes per mile. The key benchmark is whether you can hold a conversation while running (the "talk test"). If you cannot speak a full sentence without gasping, you are running too fast. Most beginner training plans start at 12-minute miles and progress to 10-minute miles over 8-12 weeks. Average recreational runners finish a 5K in 25-35 minutes, which is a 8:03 to 11:17 per mile pace.
