How to Find Your Ideal Weight

  1. Select your unit system. Imperial uses feet and inches; Metric uses centimeters. The underlying formulas are the same either way.
  2. Choose your gender. All four ideal weight formulas calculate different targets for men and women based on differences in bone density, muscle mass, and body composition. The formulas typically give women a lower target at the same height.
  3. Enter your height. Measure without shoes and stand flat against a wall for accuracy. Height directly determines the output: every inch (2.54cm) corresponds to roughly 5-6 lbs in ideal weight.
  4. Read the results. Four medical formulas are shown along with the healthy BMI weight range. The formulas tend to cluster within a 10-15 lb range. Use the middle of that range or the healthy BMI band as your realistic target.

These formulas work best for average-build adults. Athletes with high muscle mass or individuals with unusual proportions may fall outside the predicted ranges.

The Four Ideal Weight Formulas

All four formulas use height as the primary input and are calculated separately for men and women. Base values assume 5 feet (60 inches / 152.4cm) and add a fixed amount per additional inch:

FormulaYearMale Base + Per InchFemale Base + Per Inch
Devine197450 kg + 2.3 kg/inch45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/inch
Robinson198352 kg + 1.9 kg/inch49 kg + 1.7 kg/inch
Miller198356.2 kg + 1.41 kg/inch53.1 kg + 1.36 kg/inch
Hamwi196448 kg + 2.7 kg/inch45.4 kg + 2.3 kg/inch

Example: 5'8" (68 inches) male, Devine formula: 50 + (8 × 2.3) = 50 + 18.4 = 68.4 kg = 150.8 lbs. Healthy BMI weight range for 5'8": 125-163 lbs (BMI 18.5-24.9).

Frequently Asked Questions

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a target weight range derived from statistical studies of healthy populations. Medical formulas like Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi estimate IBW based on height and gender. These formulas were originally developed for clinical purposes like drug dosing (where actual weight may lead to over- or under-dosing) and are now commonly used as weight targets. No single formula is universally superior; they typically agree within 10-15 lbs.
