How to Use the Grade Calculator

  1. Choose weighted or points mode. Points mode adds up all raw scores and divides by total possible points, like most elementary and middle school grading. Weighted mode applies different percentage weights to each category, like most high school and college courses where exams count more than homework.
  2. Enter each assignment. Type the score you received and the maximum possible score. For upcoming assignments you have not completed yet, leave the score blank. The calculator uses these to determine what you need on the remaining work.
  3. In weighted mode, enter the weight for each item. This is the percentage of the final grade that assignment or category represents. All weights must add up to 100%.
  4. Set your desired final grade to see what you need to earn on the remaining assignments. The required score is shown below the totals.

If the required score on a remaining assignment exceeds 100%, you cannot mathematically reach your target grade. Adjust your goal or check if extra credit is available.

How Grade Calculations Work

Two grading systems are commonly used in schools and colleges:

Points-Based Grading:
Final Grade % = (Total Points Earned / Total Points Possible) × 100

Example: 87 + 92 + 78 + 95 = 352 earned
Total possible: 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 = 400
Final grade: 352/400 × 100 = 88%

Weighted Grading:
Final Grade = Σ(Category Average × Category Weight)

Example:
Homework: 85% × 20% weight = 17.0
Quizzes: 78% × 15% weight = 11.7
Midterm: 82% × 25% weight = 20.5
Final: 91% × 40% weight = 36.4
Total: 17.0 + 11.7 + 20.5 + 36.4 = 85.6%

Frequently Asked Questions

In a weighted grading system, different assignments or categories count for different percentages of the final grade. A syllabus might weight homework at 20%, quizzes at 15%, the midterm at 25%, and the final exam at 40%. Getting a 95% on the final matters much more than getting 95% on homework, because the final carries twice the weight. To calculate your grade, multiply each category's average by its weight and sum the results.
