How Currency Conversion Works

All conversions go through USD as the base currency:

Amount in USD = Input amount ÷ from-currency rate
Result = Amount in USD × to-currency rate

Each currency has a rate expressing how many units equal 1 USD. For example, if 1 USD = 1.364 CAD and 1 USD = 0.925 EUR:

Convert 200 CAD to EUR:
  USD amount = 200 ÷ 1.364 = 146.63 USD
  EUR result = 146.63 × 0.925 = 135.63 EUR

Frequently Asked Questions

Banks and exchange bureaus add a spread (the difference between buy and sell prices) plus fees on top of the interbank mid-market rate. The mid-market rate is what you see quoted on financial sites and tools like this one. A bank might quote you 1 USD = 0.90 EUR when the mid-market rate is 0.925 EUR, pocketing 0.025 EUR per dollar as profit. Wire transfers, credit card transactions, and cash exchanges each have different spreads.
