How to Calculate Sales Tax

  1. Add Tax mode. Enter the pre-tax price, select your state from the dropdown (state rates are pre-loaded), and add any local or city tax rate if you know it. The calculator shows the tax amount and the total with tax included.
  2. Remove Tax mode. Enter a total price that already includes sales tax to work backward. The calculator shows the original pre-tax price and the exact tax amount. Useful for expense reports or verifying a receipt.
  3. Local tax rates. Most states allow cities, counties, and special districts to add their own sales tax on top of the state base rate. Local rates typically add 1-3%. For example, California's state rate is 7.25%, but combined state and local rates in many California cities reach 10-10.75%.

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Alaska and Montana allow local jurisdictions to add their own rates.

State Sales Tax Rates (2024)

Sales tax is calculated as a percentage of the taxable sale price. The formulas:

Tax Amount = Pre-Tax Price × (Tax Rate / 100)
Total Price = Pre-Tax Price × (1 + Tax Rate / 100)
Pre-Tax Price = Total Price / (1 + Tax Rate / 100)

Frequently Asked Questions

Five US states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska and Montana allow local jurisdictions (cities and counties) to collect their own sales taxes, so purchases in some areas of those states are not tax-free. Delaware and Oregon prohibit local sales taxes entirely, making them the cleanest no-tax states for purchases.
