How to Use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount. Use the pre-tax subtotal from your receipt, not the total after tax. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the standard practice in the US.
  2. Select a tip percentage. Choose 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25% from the preset buttons, or type a custom percentage. The quick reference table below the calculator shows all five options at once for easy comparison.
  3. Set the number of people. If splitting the bill, enter the total number of diners. The calculator divides both the tip and the total bill evenly among the group.
  4. Read your results. The calculator shows the tip amount, total bill, and per-person amounts instantly. Use the quick reference table to compare what different tip percentages would cost before deciding.

For a $75 dinner with 2 people at 20%, the tip is $15.00, the total is $90.00, and each person owes $45.00. Use the 18% preset as your baseline for good service and adjust up or down from there.

Tip Amount by Service Type

Standard tipping rates in the US vary by service type. These ranges reflect current norms, not minimums. Going above the range is always appreciated.

Bartender15-20%$1-2 per drink at minimum
Food delivery15-20%More for long distance or bad weather
Hair stylist / barber15-20%15% on the full service price
Taxi / rideshare15-20%Apps often default to 15% or 18%
Hotel housekeeping$2-5/nightLeave daily, not just at checkout
Hotel valet$2-5 per retrievalTip when you pick up the car, not drop off
Massage therapist15-20%Even at a medical spa or chiropractic setting
Buffet5-10%Optional; tip if staff refills drinks or clears plates
Counter / fast casualOptional$1-2 appreciated; not expected

The formula for calculating a tip is straightforward: multiply your bill by the tip percentage (expressed as a decimal). A 20% tip on a $85 bill is $85 × 0.20 = $17. The total bill is $85 + $17 = $102. For two people, each pays $51.

Frequently Asked Questions

18-20% is the current standard for good service at a sit-down restaurant in the US. 15% was the norm for decades, but expectations have shifted upward. Use 20% as your default for solid service, 25% or more for exceptional, and 10-15% if service was genuinely poor. Leaving nothing is considered rude except in cases of truly unacceptable service.
