1. Multiple Choice: 55 questions, 55 minutes. Worth 40% of composite.
2. Short Answer (SAQ): 3 questions, 40 minutes. 9 points total (3 sub-parts each).
3. Document-Based Question (DBQ): 1 essay, 60 minutes including 15-min reading period. 7 points.
4. Long Essay Question (LEQ): 1 essay, 40 minutes. 6 points. Choose 1 of 3 prompts from different time periods (1200-1450, 1450-1750, 1750-1900, 1900-present).
5. Combined FR total: 22 points possible. The calculator weights MC 40% and FR 60% per College Board.

MC % = (MC correct / 55) × 100
FR % = (SAQ + DBQ + LEQ / 22) × 100

Composite = MC × 0.40 + FR × 0.60

AP Score cutoffs (approximate):
5: 70%, 4: 57%, 3: 44%, 2: 32%

Example: 36/55 MC (65%) and 15/22 FR (68%).

• Composite = (65 × 0.40) + (68 × 0.60) = 26 + 40.8 = 66.8%
• Above the 4 cutoff (57%), below the 5 cutoff (70%) → AP Score: 4

AP World History: Modern is the most-taken AP world history exam with ~315,000 test takers annually. Pass rate is around 65%, with about 14% earning a 5.

Three things AP World teachers consistently emphasize:

• Master the four AP World time periods. Units 1-2 (1200-1450), Units 3-4 (1450-1750), Units 5-6 (1750-1900), Units 7-9 (1900-present). LEQ prompts give one from each — pick the period you know best.
• Comparative essays carry the day. AP World rewards essays that compare across regions and time periods. "Compare the impact of trade routes on the Mongol Empire and the Songhai Empire" is the kind of question that earns 5s.
• The DBQ requires non-Western perspectives. AP World expects you to incorporate at least one document about Asian, African, or Latin American history into your DBQ analysis. Many students default to Western European context and lose evidence points.
