How to Use the Time to Decimal Calculator

  1. Time to Decimal mode: enter hours, minutes, and seconds in the respective fields. The calculator instantly shows the decimal hours, decimal minutes, and total seconds. This is the mode you need for payroll and timesheet calculations.
  2. Decimal to Time mode: enter a decimal number of hours (for example, 7.75) and the calculator converts it back to HH:MM:SS format (7:45:00). Use this when your payroll software gives you decimal hours and you want to verify the actual clock time.
  3. The reference table at the bottom covers the most common conversions so you can double-check your math at a glance.

Payroll example: an employee works 8 hours 20 minutes. In decimal, that is 8.3333 hours. At $22 per hour, pay is 8.3333 × $22 = $183.33. Without the decimal conversion, rounding 8 hours 20 minutes to "8 hours" shortchanges the employee by $7.33.

Time to Decimal Formula

Converting hours:minutes:seconds to decimal hours:

Decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60) + (seconds ÷ 3600)

Example: 2:30:00
= 2 + (30 ÷ 60) + (0 ÷ 3600)
= 2 + 0.5 + 0
= 2.5 hours

Example: 7:45:30
= 7 + (45 ÷ 60) + (30 ÷ 3600)
= 7 + 0.75 + 0.00833
= 7.7583 hours

Converting decimal hours back to time:

Hours = integer part of decimal (floor)
Minutes = (decimal part × 60), take the integer
Seconds = ((decimal part × 60) - minutes) × 60

Example: 7.75 hours
Hours   = 7
Minutes = 0.75 × 60 = 45
Seconds = 0
Result  = 7:45:00

Why this matters for payroll: federal law (the FLSA) requires overtime pay for hours over 40 per week. Using rounded decimal hours introduces systematic errors that add up over time. A worker clocking in at 8:53 and out at 5:07 works exactly 8 hours 14 minutes, or 8.2333 decimal hours, not 8.25 or 8.0.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the whole hours. For 3 hours 45 minutes: 45 / 60 = 0.75, so the decimal is 3.75. For 6 hours 20 minutes: 20 / 60 = 0.333, giving 6.333 decimal hours. Most payroll software accepts two decimal places, so 6.33 is standard.
