How to Use the Generation Calculator

  1. Enter your birth year in the field. The calculator instantly identifies which generation you belong to based on widely accepted birth year ranges used by researchers like the Pew Research Center.
  2. The result shows the generation name, birth year span, your current age, and a brief summary of that generation's defining characteristics.
  3. The reference table below the calculator shows all generations side by side with their current age ranges for 2026.

Example: born in 1985, you are a Millennial (born 1981 to 1996). In 2026 you are 41 years old. Millennials came of age during the early internet era and experienced both the 9/11 attacks and the 2008 financial crisis as young adults.

Generational Birth Year Ranges

There is no single legal or scientific authority that sets generational boundaries. The ranges used here are based on the Pew Research Center definitions and are the most widely cited in academic and media contexts.

Greatest Generation: 1901 to 1927
Silent Generation: 1928 to 1945
Baby Boomers: 1946 to 1964
Generation X: 1965 to 1980
Millennials: 1981 to 1996
Generation Z: 1997 to 2012
Generation Alpha: 2013 onward

How age ranges work: in 2026, Baby Boomers are ages 62 to 80. Millennials are 30 to 45. Gen Z is 14 to 29. These age ranges shift by one year every year.

Why boundaries vary: different researchers and organizations use slightly different cutoffs. Some sources place the Millennial cutoff at 1994 or 2000 rather than 1996. The Pew 1981 to 1996 range is the most commonly used in research as of 2024.
