How to Use the Power Converter

  1. Type any value. Enter a number in any unit field and all 7 units update at once. No button to press. The default shows 1 horsepower and its equivalents.
  2. Electricity and appliances. Home appliances are rated in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). A typical microwave uses 1,000 W (1 kW). Type 1000 in the Watt field to see the equivalent in horsepower and BTU/hour.
  3. Engine power. Car engines are rated in horsepower (hp). Type the horsepower of any engine to instantly compare it in kilowatts, which is the standard in Europe and many international contexts.
  4. HVAC and heating. Air conditioners and heaters are rated in BTU/hour (BTU/hr). A 12,000 BTU/hr window AC equals about 3,517 W (3.517 kW) of heat removal capacity.

Example: a 200 hp sports car engine. Type 200 in the Horsepower field to see: 149,140 W, 149.14 kW, 0.14914 MW, 509,063 BTU/hr, 35,645 cal/s, 110,000 ft·lb/s.

Power Conversion Formulas

All conversions use watts (W) as the base unit:

Value in watts = Input × toWatts factor
Result in target unit = Value in watts ÷ toWatts factor
UnitWatts (exact or standard)1 watt equals
1 watt1 W1 W
1 kilowatt1,000 W0.001 kW
1 megawatt1,000,000 W0.000001 MW
1 horsepower (mech.)745.69987 W0.001341 hp

1 calorie/second4.184 W0.239006 cal/s
1 foot-pound/second1.3558179 W0.737562 ft·lb/s

Key relationships: 1 hp = 550 ft·lb/s (the original Watt definition). 1 kW = 3,412.14 BTU/hr (useful for HVAC calculations). A "ton of refrigeration" = 12,000 BTU/hr = 3,516.85 W, used to rate commercial air conditioning capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply horsepower by 0.7457 to get kilowatts. For example, a 300 hp engine = 300 × 0.7457 = 223.7 kW. Going the other direction, multiply kW by 1.341 to get hp. This conversion is common when comparing American car specs (hp) with European specs (kW). Note: mechanical horsepower (745.7 W) is the US standard; metric horsepower (PS) is slightly different at 735.5 W and is common in European car specs.
